Genetics

Is Gelato indica or sativa? Its genetics, cuts and family tree

Gelato is a hybrid: a cross of Sunset Sherbert, an indica-dominant strain, and Thin Mint GSC, a phenotype of Girl Scout Cookies, both from San Francisco’s Cookie Fam.1,2,3 Leafly calls it evenly balanced; AllBud and most seed sellers call it indica-leaning.1,4,5 “Gelato” is also a family name: the numbered phenotypes 33, 41 and 45 are sold as strains in their own right, and dozens of crosses carry the word.6,7

The two parents

Sunset Sherbert (Leafly files it as Sherbert, also Sherbet and Sunset Sherbet) is an indica-dominant cross of Girl Scout Cookies and Pink Panties bred by Mr. Sherbinski.2 Leafly’s genealogy says it was an accident around 2012: a male Pink Panties, itself a Burmese sativa × Larry OG cross, pollinated a room of GSC females.13 Sherbinski told High Times the Pink Panties came from a Burmese pollen Jigga had, put onto his Larry OG “Ish cut”; a 2023 High Times piece gives Pink Panties’ parents instead as an OG Kush female and Burmese Blackberry Kush pollen.14,15

Thin Mint is one of the main sub-types of GSC, which Leafly lists as OG Kush × F1 Durb from the California breeder Jigga; Thin Mint Cookies won Best Hybrid at the 2014 NorCal Medical Cannabis Cup.3,13,16 Most sources name Thin Mint as Gelato’s Cookies parent, including Sherbinskis’ own site; Leafly’s genealogy and its Gelato 45 page say simply Girl Scout Cookies.8,13,17

How the cross was made

With reversed pollen, though accounts differ on whose. Leafly’s genealogy says Jigga and Sherbinski used colloidal silver to make a female Sunset Sherbet flower produce pollen, then pollinated a GSC; GreenState says he reversed Sunset Sherbet and crossed “the now male plant” with Thin Mint GSC.13,18 In both, Sunset Sherbet supplied the pollen. Sherbinski’s own description to High Times in 2018 differs: Gelato came from “getting feminized pollen from the cookies x sherbert, and going back to the sherbert x cookies”, and that produced the numbered phenotypes #25, #33, #41, #45, #47 and #49.14 The other accounts we opened name the two parents without saying which supplied the pollen.1,8,15,19 The phenotypes were picked by tasting: SeedFinder’s Sherbinskis entry says about 25 were evaluated at a Cookie-family tasting, and High Times reported in 2016 that the group had settled on five standouts.19,20

Who bred it, and when: the accounts

Sources agree on the parents and the city. They differ on who gets the credit and on the year.

How indica is it?

Every source calls Gelato a hybrid, but the split depends on who is describing it, and on which version. Leafly calls it evenly balanced and rates its effects mostly calming; AllBud lists 55% indica / 45% sativa.1,4 Among seed sellers, Barney’s Farm gives 60% indica, Crop King and ILGM say indica-dominant, Nirvana calls it balanced, and FastBuds’ autoflower is 55% sativa.5,26,27,28,29 Leafly’s own pages for the cuts pull in different directions: #41 is described as a heavy, relaxing body high, #33 as uplifting and energetic.23,30

One name, many cuts

Gelato is sold both as a family name and as numbered phenotypes with their own pages, nicknames and prices. The lists do not quite agree.

Which cuts are in our lab numbers

Our strict name matching treats a bare number as a lot code, so products labelled Gelato 33 (531 tests) and Gelato 41 (215) sit inside the 1,792 tests on this site; Gelato 45 is counted as its own strain and left out.34 A further 10 results were labelled Gelato 42, the disputed cut.34 Gelato 45 has its own guide in the Official Cannabis network at gelato45.com.

Seeds, clones and imposters

The original cuts were never sold as seed. In 2014 the Cookie Family told High Times that rather than selling seeds they wanted Cookies to be a more intimate experience for growers, and in 2024 Guzman told GreenState that the only way to guarantee real Gelato is to get it from him, adding that people put the name on products because it adds value.18,25

Seeds sold as Gelato are new crosses or selections: SeedFinder lists 18 breeders’ versions under the name and 191 direct descendants of the original.7,35 Barney’s Farm sells Blue Sunset Sherbert × Thin Mint GSC, FastBuds’ autoflower is a Gelato cut × Cookies Auto, and Crop King, Nirvana and ILGM sell feminized versions they describe as Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC.5,26,27,28,29

What our lab data adds

The name is used far beyond the family. Our strict matching excluded 6,286 results across all product types (4,635 of them flower) sold under near-miss names, led by "Gelato Cake" (1,331 results), then "Green Gelato - GEL" (213), "Watermelon Gelato TC" (178), "Biscotti Gelato" (133).34 Leafly lists Gelato Cake as Gelato #33 × Wedding Cake, a different, indica-dominant strain; its parent Wedding Cake and its sibling Ice Cream Cake each have their own guide in the network (weddingcakestrain.com, icecreamcakestrain.com).10,11
